As I sit here, enmeshed in the round of "how much postage do I need", I realise that, were I to appear in the HP universe, the Dursleys would hate me, simply because I cannot do postage.
Of course, at least here you have a monetary amount on the stamp. In the UK, you have first class, second class, etc. Which always made me wonder. If I'm mailing a single page letter to the Outer Hebrides, will one first class stamp get it there? This is why I NEVER mailed anything there, because I had to go to the Post Office, and stand in the queue and look like a total prat as I said "Will that get it there?" They handed me random stamps, I took the random stamps, and wished my letters well as they disappeared forever with what I thought could well be insufficient postage.
For those of you who scoff and say "Pah! The postal service certainly knows how much postage you require," all I have to say is "Try mailing a letter in England, bucko, and then we'll talk."
They are notorious for losing post, having strikes, etc. As far as I know, they only ever deliver your mail on the third Thursday of every lunar month. I cannot expect to trust these people with knowing how much postage I need to get a letter to Birmingham or Bumblefuckshire or anywhere else.
And as I sit here staring at my US mail, with two stamps on a letter with four sheets in, and three stamps on something that has to go international (and it's such a pity I don't carry 80 cent stamps for these moments) I realise that Vernon Dursley would pitch an absolute wobbly if I were to mail something to them, even though I am not a wizard.
I simply cannot do postage. My horrible secret is out.
