So I'm at my parents' house, sitting for the monsters while my parents are in Oregon (the trip they'd planned to take will be taken next week, to Montana, don't ask me, I just work here) and I'm trying to decide if I'd rather take a shower, try to write (omg so behind) or freeze to death, which seems to be what I'm sort of doing.
Taking a shower seems the best option because then I'd be warm, but literally all my clothing that could be considered of a trousery or sockish nature is in the wash. So there'd be the death freezing while I waited for that to dry.
This is all because I'm REAL clever in the mornings. Or else my pajamas would NOT be in the wash.
I dreamt that I posted an email about some random new game to a folder at work and was told by former boss that I had wrong-posted again; it wasn't until I was fully awake that I realised that didn't make any sense at all, and that I wasn't going to get fired. Sadly, I can't remember the dream I was having when my ex boss interrupted it and I remember that as being so pleasant that I went back to sleep to have it some more after she woke me up.
I'm tempted to turn on the heat today, but it seems cruel to leave the dogs here with the smell of the heater just turned on. I love autumn, it's my favourite season, but the smell of turning the heater in my parents' house on is NOT one of the things I like. I once suspected we'd lost a hamster down the vent. That turned out to be erroneous, but mainly only because the house smells like that every year. Though I suppose it's really just dust rather than flesh-rot.
My mother told me all about the coming pandemic (if she's gonna watch Nightline, that's her business, but she can't tell ME about it) and how we're basically fucked by the just-in-time nature of inventory control now and how the Senate approved !amount of money we don't have to deal with this, for starters by building a factory to make lots of flu vaccine (given the cock up of the regular flu vaccine, I suspect this will suck). Then I read an article about planned economies and it occurs to me that we're getting a wee bit away from the strictly-capitalist mentality by allowing this PLANNED ECONOMY to happen RIGHT HERE IN AMERICA OMG WOE.
I reassured myself that we're not all turning just slightly pinko by remembering that, in the event of a pandemic, it won't matter anyway because a) we'll run out of flu vaccine after someone hijacks the shipments and sells them on the black market (close to what already happens, interestingly enough) b) arm + leg will be charged for them, unless you have a declared income of more than 200 grand a year, in which case it'll be free, and c) that I really hope a president who has respect for someone in the world is in office at the time because otherwise they won't bother with vaccines and they'll just let us die.
Seriously. The projection is five percent of the world's population will die, and that might be concentrated, say, in places where peoples' immune systems are already compromised, like Sub-Saharan Africa with its HIV rate, but that's 360 million people (more than the population of the US, fyi) dead.
Hurrah!
Cheerful thoughts for a morning.
But if I take a shower now, my clothing will be dry and I'll still be alive for the pandemic to get me. If the deadly lava flow doesn't.
