When I become an evil overlord, my guards will have three working shifts with no rotations. Anyone caught sleeping on night shift will be hanged immediately. Anyone who attempts to justify sleeping on night shift by indicating that they are too stupid to recognise that they WORK at NIGHT and SLEEP during the DAY will be hanged after a visit to the torture chambers.
My parents have worked night shift exclusively for ten or fifteen years - it is possible to stay awake all night and sleep during the day. And yet, there is always a guard at night, generally alone, who always falls asleep.
