I read a book last night, Red Scarf Girl, about the Cultural Revolution in China. At one point, when all was shit, everyone in authority was encouraging the author to separate completely from her family, because if she simply changed her name and renounced all contact with them, her life would be fine. Her family, to give some context, was considered to be landlords because her long-dead grandfather had owned a lot of property.
She considered it very seriously for a while.
I think that there are probably a lot of people in China who took that route, or similar ones, who aren't writing their biographies.
This entire war makes me want to change my name and renounce my country. It really does.
