I've often wondered and fantasized about that sort of thing. HP is so realistic in some ways, but out of necessity leaves some issues out, like Hogwarts having endless food. Could that be used for starving people? What of students that might come from starving/poor country to Hogwarts? Mass/nuclear weaponry is likewise omitted, which makes sense because that would be, like, seventeen more books. What if a student brought a gun to school? Or a rifle? What would happen in the case of a spell that prohibited/disabled the Hogwarts' staff/students' abilities to wield magic? People like Harry and Hermoine would have the only knowlege of powerful weapons - but Arthur Weasley would be most likely to have access to them. And the purebloods, most desireous of powerful weaponry, would be most unable to procure, use, or even be aware of the type of weapons that truly contain the ability to destory.

A particular favorite of mine is considering Hermoine, most likely the only student to not only know about but worry about nuclear power, having to keep that secret fast to herself. She would carry the most important information in the world in terms of Voldemort's destructive cpabilities, so the welfare of the wizarding world would actually revolve around her secrecy and safety, while everyone was worried about Harry.

One person wrote a cool fic about that, where Harry is in posession of an artifact that puts him in alternative realities, each starting from the same time, but vastlty altered by the changing possible circumstances, like Quantum Leap. In it, one of the scenarios is that he find himself crouched down in the forest at night. And after some searching, he stumbles across Neville, also hiding hungry and bedraggled in the forest, who explains that Muggles have taken over the castle. They reunite with others, who explain that while there are amazing magical defensive and offensive weapons, most magical weapons cannot be reproduced, handed out and used by people with little or no training, and cannot kill more than one or two people at a time. Hogwarts was easily overtaken with a small military force and tear gas bombs, since Avada Kedavra does not an army make. Harry had to save three prisoners from the castle with a well-established military occupation in place, and everything from dogs to heat sensors to rifles trained against him. It was not only fuckin' awesomely written, it was clever and unusual.

I've always wanted to see the subject explored further. I don't read fanfic anymore, because I have read the most enthusiasticly rec'd ones, and I don't have time, and I've pretty much gotten it out of my system. But I've always wondered what would happen if Snape learned about guns - especially if that lesson was taught by a Muggle-born student.
