Oh, yeah - I forgot. Whever Harry is transported, he doesn't have a wand. He has to go find himself - his doppleganger - in each of the realities, in order to have a loyal helper, get hold of his wand, and save his own life. If either Harry gets killed, they both get killed. Each time he has to explain himself, get into the situation, determine everyone's loyalties and condition, assess the situation, and react accordingly - and the same characters might be making very different choices in different scenarios. Sometimes Snape's an enemy. Sometimes a friend. Sometimes he's dead, other times a prisoner, or unaccounted for the whole time. Each time all the characters are themselves - but different due to where the situation has landed them.

It's interesting how his approach to others changes as the story moves on. He gets more confident, more wary, more succinct. Since he know he will only be in each relaity for a short, but unknown amount of time, he increasingly is willing to lie, steal, and do pretty much anything to get himself, his wand, and whomever else he can out of danger before the artifact sends him somewhere else.

I'm tellin' ya, the story rocks, and I would love to find it again. It's very, very long, but it as well worth the two fuckin' days I spend reading it non-stop.
