It's not too much different from having the school shooting occur in Timbuk2 versus having it happen in your own school and wounding/killing friends that you know. One is up close and person and the other is far away, but both are important events. I don't have any emotional ties to the Oklahoma bombing or to the kids dying of malnutrition across the world, but that doesn't mean I don't care or that it's not important.
I can only imagine that perhaps the unresolved feelings are more your brain telling you that it's bad that you haven't had your heart strings tugged from the event. What's important to keep in mind is that you know the importance of that historical event and of the lives it affected, including your own. You are still a part of that history and that event is still important in your life even if you didn't experience it first hand.
You could always try a little psychological stratagem. Get out a couple sheets of good ol' fashioned paper and a pen and start writing. Write a letter to those who died and those who survived them and tell them how you feel. Don't write about how you wish you could feel, but instead how you might feel if it was your mom or dad or friend who passed away. Let it tug the strings; let it pull you towards it instead of it coming to you. You never know - you might still end up crying like a tourist. :)
