If you do nothing else today, read this.

Not because I want you to know that we are letting New Orleans fail. Not because I have some special insight into that world and that problem - I do not. But because that is beauty.

And because this has been on my mind lately:
Stand
Up fucking tall
Don't let them see your back and
Take
My fucking hand
And never
Trust
You said, who put the words in your head
Oh, how wrong we were to think
That immortality meant never dying

I like the alternate title for this song: Bring More Knives.

So bring more knives with you as you go.

Thanks for that. I know so many teachers who stride into shitty schools with idealism in their eyes, and then as soon as one of their embittered charges calls them a "fucking bitch," they split for a cushy suburb job. They only want to help the oppressed as long as the oppressed glow with gratitude.

We're not comfortable, I think, with people who don't want to cut and run - our lives are supposed to be easy, and I think as a society (aside from the issues of welfare, etc) we're not well set up to actually see when things are very hard and very bad - we're only set up to run away. Not that I'm fighting the good fight, but I liked that he went back rather than ran.
