I just got laid off.

I am...actually not sure how I feel about this. Probably good, all in all.

I know this is a pretty bitter-sweet thing for you, and I wish you best of luck in landing on your feet.

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

Bittersweet more than I expected, yes, but oh my god I am so happy even if I never find another job in publishing and am relegated to running a 7-11.

From: [identity profile] sparkfrost.livejournal.com

You're better than them anyways. Good luck! Email me if you want to talk!

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

I may well do that (if I can focus for ten minutes and not shout "YAY I'M FREE!" again, you know. *g*) Thanks!

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

I may wind up doing this. Several of the jobs I'm looking at are in DC. East Coast formal omg!

From: [identity profile] hilarityallen.livejournal.com

eep. Decent redundancy package, or is this sort of thing not common in the States? Good luck with finding something new.

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

I haven't read all the way through it, but I'm probably comfortable into the new year before I touch savings (which I would prefer not to in any event, but, you know, I'll be all right). Severance packages for layoffs are pretty common, especially at my level, and I haven't even figured out what sort of unemployment benefits I can get too.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to a new job, quite frankly. Never have I been so delighted to be laid off.

get in the car. drive south and east for 3.5 hours. bring PJs.

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

I will do, and soon, but believe me, I do not feel the least little bit bad about this. I've woken up the last two mornings going "I don't have to go to work tomorrow! Yay!" It was so dysfunctional what we were being asked to do, honestly, it was really stressing me out.

And I was starting to look for another job anyway. Okay, so I'd only started the day before, but at least this was the best possible outcome and far better than I could have hoped for. If it hadn't been for the kick in the ass, I would still be there, getting more and more bitter. This was exactly right.

And of course...

File for unemployment so you can get back the money you and your employers been paying into the system.

I think you'll be okay. Seems that place was driving you up the wall anyway. Good luck with the job hunt. :)

Re: And of course...

I have severance first, but as soon as that runs out, I'm hitting up the unemployment office. I will very defnitely be okay; it's been really kind of awesome all the people who've gone to bat for me in some way both online and off. Makes you realise how many friends we're really gifted with, you know?

Hell, I have one author planning my professional career so I can publish him a lot (which I have no problems with).

seconded. Get on then dole ASAP.

Also, get a drink down your neck. you should do that first.

Then find a job that makes you less stabby.

This is an opportunity.

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

Oh, dude, you have no idea how happy I am. I am seriously - I wake up every morning thinking "Ha! I don't have to go back to work there! Hooray!" For serious.

Drinks were had second thing after packing up everything (and omg how did I get so much stuff?) and I have severance, so I'll probably not be hitting up unemployment till the end of the year, if necessary, but I am so freakin' happy it is just disgusting. I loved my job, but I didn't love the politics or the decisions being made above me.

And when they call me back in a year and want me back I'll be absolutely in a position to tell them to kiss my lily-white ass. *g*

From: [identity profile] koemiko.livejournal.com

Everything I wanted to say has already been said, so...

Good luck!

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

Thanks! I'm really delighted to be out of that place; I'm secure financially for a while at least, and I'm well-ready to be looking for another job.

From: [identity profile] purplemoocow.livejournal.com

do you get decent severance pay?

maybe this is a blessing in disguise? i mean, not the being-without-the-job part, but the not-working-there part.

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

8 weeks plus my vacation time and my insurance continues till then, so yes. I will have to do a stint uninsured, but with luck, I'll be starting a new job that offers similar benefits; the worst-case scenario is that I'll be uninsured for six months or so.

And it's not even in disguise, dude.

Holy shit!

I either missed something or this is out of the blue, but I didn't see that coming at all for you! Wow! I'm sorry. I mean, it might be a good thing, but still...ugh.

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

Re: Holy shit!

It's fairly out of the blue, but I have really decent severance, and job opportunities falling out my ears, practically, so I'll be quite fine. And frankly, I'm fucking delighted about the whole thing anyway! Best possible outcome, as the place was driving me NUTS.

From: [identity profile] wolf-heart9.livejournal.com

Re: Holy shit!

Ahhhhh. Well, I'm glad it's a wanted outcome then. And it's great you've got a good view on it. I'm sure the severance helps out a lot. :)

Waugh. Good luck on finding something more deserving of your energy! (I didn't see this coming for you, either, though again on the potentially missing something.) If you need to come to Canada, we have a futon. ;)

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

Hell, I missed it too.

If I had a passport, I'd so be there. *g* I love Canada, and this "take a vacation!" spirit of mine does not help.

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

It is all for the best, believe me. I can't believe how good I feel.

As far as being unemployed? I've been here before and I'll be here again. It's all part of the ride.

From: [identity profile] gasslight.livejournal.com

buh? Nonetheless, I'm going with YAY, because zomg these people have been making you crazy (ier?) for a looooong time!

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

*g* Ier, I think. And yeah. I mean, I loved my job and I'd do it again in a minute but it was so entrenched in bullshit that I couldn't stand it by the end.

From: [identity profile] lzz.livejournal.com

they didn't deserve you! good luck with finding something better that doesn't drive you up the wall.

(you could come back to the UK?)

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

I'm going to be looking there, believe me. I might actually have enough qualifications now to get a job, work visa be damned.

From: [identity profile] emjay42.livejournal.com

Zoinks. Well, off to bigger and better things! Any thoughts on where you're going to go to next?

From: [identity profile] channonyarrow.livejournal.com

Probably not off to opening my own business, but I might try freelancing for a while, depending on how much work I can get in. One of my authors wants to introduce me to everyone in the SF&F biz - Baen, Tor, Roc, Del Ray - all of whom use freelance editors, and even if that's copyeding rather than editing-editing, I can do that for a long time and write in my spare time. I also have a couple book opportunities that I can exploit, and there's more than a couple jobs out there, even in Seattle. I mean, I don't want to move to New York, so I pretty much am out in the cold on that front, but there's severa things out here that look awesome.

I am so happy to be out of there!
