I haven't read all the way through it, but I'm probably comfortable into the new year before I touch savings (which I would prefer not to in any event, but, you know, I'll be all right). Severance packages for layoffs are pretty common, especially at my level, and I haven't even figured out what sort of unemployment benefits I can get too.
Thanks! I'm looking forward to a new job, quite frankly. Never have I been so delighted to be laid off.
I will do, and soon, but believe me, I do not feel the least little bit bad about this. I've woken up the last two mornings going "I don't have to go to work tomorrow! Yay!" It was so dysfunctional what we were being asked to do, honestly, it was really stressing me out.
And I was starting to look for another job anyway. Okay, so I'd only started the day before, but at least this was the best possible outcome and far better than I could have hoped for. If it hadn't been for the kick in the ass, I would still be there, getting more and more bitter. This was exactly right.
I have severance first, but as soon as that runs out, I'm hitting up the unemployment office. I will very defnitely be okay; it's been really kind of awesome all the people who've gone to bat for me in some way both online and off. Makes you realise how many friends we're really gifted with, you know?
Hell, I have one author planning my professional career so I can publish him a lot (which I have no problems with).
Oh, dude, you have no idea how happy I am. I am seriously - I wake up every morning thinking "Ha! I don't have to go back to work there! Hooray!" For serious.
Drinks were had second thing after packing up everything (and omg how did I get so much stuff?) and I have severance, so I'll probably not be hitting up unemployment till the end of the year, if necessary, but I am so freakin' happy it is just disgusting. I loved my job, but I didn't love the politics or the decisions being made above me.
And when they call me back in a year and want me back I'll be absolutely in a position to tell them to kiss my lily-white ass. *g*
8 weeks plus my vacation time and my insurance continues till then, so yes. I will have to do a stint uninsured, but with luck, I'll be starting a new job that offers similar benefits; the worst-case scenario is that I'll be uninsured for six months or so.
I either missed something or this is out of the blue, but I didn't see that coming at all for you! Wow! I'm sorry. I mean, it might be a good thing, but still...ugh.
It's fairly out of the blue, but I have really decent severance, and job opportunities falling out my ears, practically, so I'll be quite fine. And frankly, I'm fucking delighted about the whole thing anyway! Best possible outcome, as the place was driving me NUTS.
Waugh. Good luck on finding something more deserving of your energy! (I didn't see this coming for you, either, though again on the potentially missing something.) If you need to come to Canada, we have a futon. ;)
*g* Ier, I think. And yeah. I mean, I loved my job and I'd do it again in a minute but it was so entrenched in bullshit that I couldn't stand it by the end.
Probably not off to opening my own business, but I might try freelancing for a while, depending on how much work I can get in. One of my authors wants to introduce me to everyone in the SF&F biz - Baen, Tor, Roc, Del Ray - all of whom use freelance editors, and even if that's copyeding rather than editing-editing, I can do that for a long time and write in my spare time. I also have a couple book opportunities that I can exploit, and there's more than a couple jobs out there, even in Seattle. I mean, I don't want to move to New York, so I pretty much am out in the cold on that front, but there's severa things out here that look awesome.

And of course...
I think you'll be okay. Seems that place was driving you up the wall anyway. Good luck with the job hunt. :)

This is an opportunity.

maybe this is a blessing in disguise? i mean, not the being-without-the-job part, but the not-working-there part.

And it's not even in disguise, dude.

If I had a passport, I'd so be there. *g* I love Canada, and this "take a vacation!" spirit of mine does not help.

As far as being unemployed? I've been here before and I'll be here again. It's all part of the ride.
